God in the special care nursery

My job is to screen newborn babies for hearing impairment. If a baby doesn't pass the first screen, we repeat it and if they fail again, we send them to audiology. Last week we had a baby that was born at 24 weeks gestation. As he was now over 200 days old, we were able to screen this baby but he had already failed his first screen.

Due to months of injections and treatments, this baby was an extremely agitated, frantic little baby and if you touched him, he screamed. Because of this, if he didn't pass his hearing screen, he would have to be sedated during further testing of his hearing. As you can imagine, his mother was extremely worried that he would need any further treatments and intervention.

Two of us went to rescreen this baby as we thought we might have to cradle him and rock him during the screen. The other screener was also a Christian so as we went to screen this baby we prayed for him. When we got there he was asleep - a very rare thing in this baby's life. All the nurses warned us that if we woke him, we would have to walk around with him all day!

We continued to pray over him as we screened him and I really felt the peace of God over this baby. As we attached the sensors and ear muffs, he stayed asleep. As we ran the test which involved a series of clicks going into his ears, he stayed asleep. Through the whole screen, this baby slept. Not only did he stay asleep but he also passed his screen.

Knowing how agitated this baby usually is, this is a miracle. I thank God for His help and I know this baby is being cared for by the Great Physician. Praise the Lord!
