November Mega Night of Prayer |
Last night we had our whole church Mega Night of Prayer, where we all came together to seek God and let our prayer requests be known to Him. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
So that’s what we did, we worshipped our Lord and prayed for all that we care about, our Church, Pastors, Leaders and Ministries; evangelism & revival in our sphere of influence, Nexus Missions and the missionaries we support, our Community Care and Justice Programs, The city of Brisbane and Council, Mayor, Councillors & Churches, our state and our nation.
Some of our people even travelled up from the Gold Coast, and there were over 20 kids praying in the Prayer Chapel. We had a fantastic time in the presence of God, and everyone was prayed for individually and anointed with oil.
Next year we will be having Mega Night of Prayer on the last Wednesday of Feb, May, Aug & Oct, we would love for everyone to join us.

Yr 12 Graduates off to bless Uganda! |
Yesterday a group of Yr 12 Graduate students from Northside Christian College and Nexus left for a three week missions trip to Uganda. The team consists of 26 people, 5 adults and 21 students. Their mission is guaranteed to be exciting, challenging, daunting and uplifting, a time of great dependence on God and each other for support spiritually, physically and emotionally. In Acts 1:8 God asks us to share with those in our immediate world, to reach beyond our immediate world and to care about the whole world.
The team are going to Kabale and Kampala, where their mission is to spread the good news and to bring hope and a better future to children who have been orphaned as a result of war and AIDS. While they are there, the primary focus is to bring support to a local Drop-In Centre, and to meet and work along side other people involved in a variety of ministries. This support will include building, painting, speaking, sharing and singing, playing sports, and interacting with the people.
The personal goals for the trip are for personal growth, to develop their servant heart, for teamwork, and to be challenged and provoked into a life of obedience, commitment and service for the Glory of God.
Whilst the short-term mission trip by itself may not make a huge impact on Uganda’s future, it is part of a much bigger plan that God is working, to change people and the whole fabric of society in that country.
We are so very proud of these students who have chosen to go and serve & be a blessing to people, please keep the whole team in your prayers over the next three weeks.

Nexus Kids 2011 |
As another year draws to a close we thought it would be a great time to take a look at what has been happening in Nexus Kids this year.
Did you know that in 2011:
- Nexus Kids had over 100 volunteer leaders
- We had 380 children on our roll
- Our playgroup was full and had a waiting list
- We started a kids worship band for budding young musicians and singers
- Our 3-4 yr olds group grew and grew and grew – last Sunday we had 47 children
- 20 children developed early leadership skills by helping out as junior leaders in a number of our programs
- On Connections mornings about a dozen Yr 12 girls from the College helped out as part of their Early Childhood Studies
- We opened our brand new crèche which is now home to 20+ toddlers every Sunday
- We introduced our new Nexus Kids logo and had t-shirts printed for our leaders
- Over 1000 “Nexus Kids” balloons were distributed
- Our Breakfast Club program expanded to include a second primary school
- 8 volunteers taught RE to every class in 2 local schools
- We sent approximately 500 birthday cards to children
- We ran 2 parenting seminars – Loving our Kids on Purpose and Triple P
- Our kids had a Night of Prayer in the Prayer Chapel
- During Designing Women we ran children’s programs for 3 different age groups
- Approximately 50 children responded to salvation messages in Kids Church
Of course, all of this has been made possible because of our fantastic volunteers! So…this week we held a coffee night to say a huge THANK YOU to all of our Kids Church volunteers for their dedication and enthusiasm for all that happens in Nexus Kids. We asked a few parents to express their thanks to our leaders and this is what they had to say:
- We would like to say a huge thank you for the eternal seed that you have planted over this last year. We as parents are exceptionally grateful for the love passion and fervour for the ways of Jesus that you have imparted into our children week in week out. It is a privilege to be recipients of this love. Thank you so much!
- As a parent, it is such a blessing to have an hour or so to join with the Nexus congregation, to be inspired by the Word of God and serve in God’s house, all while being confident that your little munchkin is being cared for by a precious bunch of people, who persevere, are patient, and work hard to allow parents that freedom. For that service and love, I am so so grateful for all of our Kids Church leaders. As leaders of the kids you are not just impacting the next generation, but also this generation by allowing us families to be encouraged and encourage others. Thank you, thank you. Love you all!!
- Dear NEXUS kids workers, to us you have been a life-giving fragrance! My kids love going to church and look forward to learning more about God there. All my kids talk about God and their experiences with Him in a way that I (as an adult) can learn from. I love that I can bring my children to their groups and leave them there knowing that they are well cared for, enjoying themselves and most importantly returning home with a new experience of who God is in their life

Welcome home Jayne Conry |
Jayne Conry one of our very own Nexus ladies has just returned home for a few months after spending 2 years aboard the Logos Hope Ship. We caught up with her to find out more about her life on deck.
2 years living on a ship? 27 countries? Selling books? Why?
That would be the Logos Hope Ship – 9 decks high, the length of a football field, but basically a big chunk of metal carrying the presence of God. Selling books opens doors into poor countries, Muslim countries, Buddhist and Hindu countries. On an average day, 6,000 people line up for hours to come to the book fair and to meet crew members. But that’s all facts, so let me tell you some stories.
After walking through the world’s largest floating book fair, you enter the international cafe where you can buy an ice-cream, cookie or coffee. I would go down there sometimes, approach a table and say, “Can I sit here?” Not once was I refused. One day I was speaking to a lady from the Caribbean. She believed in Jesus but did not seem interested in talking about Him and neither did she understand that He wanted a personal relationship with her. After talking for a while and her showing very little interest, I asked if I could pray for her before I left. She agreed and started rubbing her forehead. I asked if she had a headache. “Yes, I’ve been getting a lot of headaches lately.” So I prayed for her to understand Jesus’ love for her and for her headache to be healed. After praying she started rubbing her head in all different places with a very confused look on her face. I asked her what was wrong. She said, “My headache is gone.” I replied, “Well, the Jesus who healed your headache loves you and wants a personal relationship with you.” Thank You Jesus!
Another day I was talking to a man. I asked what books he had bought. He pulled out a bible and showed me. I asked if he had read the bible before. “No.” So I asked if he knew how to read the bible. Again he said “No”. I have never had such a simple opportunity to show someone how to read the Living Word!!!
Our first visit to the Middle East was to Libya. Dr Aicha Gaddafi, aka Gaddafi’s daughter, was the one who invited us to Libya and her organisation hosted us there! We were able to meet many from her organisation as they spent most days on the ship and they showed great hospitality in taking us on outings. They were impressed that we were such God fearing people, that we prayed, read the bible, and spent time devoted to God. Being an Arab is to be a Muslim and they expect that having white skin is to be a Christian. They therefore very easily ask us about how we believe in God. I was amazed how we could speak about God is such an easy and uncomplicated way. A few months after leaving Libya and Egypt, war broke out. We felt such an amazing honour that we could bring hope to individuals before hope as a nation was taken from them.
In Qatar, we were told that we could not sell any Christian books. Our smart book fair manager decided to leave 2 book shelves with Christian books and see what the sensors say. The sensors came through the book fair before we were allowed to open. They took one of each Christian title, put it in their basket, and never came back again. The amazing thing was that these 2 book shelves were constantly crowded and the shelves had to be restocked 4 times per day!!!
So this is just a fraction of what God has been doing over the last 2 years on the Logos Hope. If you’re interested in missions, don’t wait till ‘another time’. You will never regret taking the leap of faith.
So, what’s next?
I will be going to the Near East to learn Arabic, make friends and share God’s love in whatever way I can. If you want to hear more or would like to receive my newsletters, shoot me an email. (jayne@conryclan.com)

Global Engagement – October trip to Indonesia |
Our Global Engagment Director Cindy had lots of fun in Indonesia when she visited in early October. She was mainly there to teach at a training course for young people, where many of the students come from challenging and difficult backgrounds. One young man had been a street kid and had not had the privilege of a loving home environment, others had been rejected by their families due to hard choices they had to make, but all of them live by faith and with such joy. One of the activities which ended up being a hit was teaching young Indonesians how to do Australian bush dancing. They picked it up very quickly and even modified it with latest hip hop movements.
While Cindy was there she was able to spend some time visiting the two families in Indonesia that Nexus supports. She brought with her lots of goodies for them, such as Tim Tams and choccies and other little luxuries that they are unable to purchase in Indonesia. The two families really appreciated the visit from Cindy and the continued support from Nexus, and all round it was a very encouraging time.

Big Ideas with Vishal Mangalwadi |
Photo of Mat Carney, Vishal & Cindy McGarvieOver three hundred people came out on the evening of Tuesday 11th October to hear Vishal Mangalwadi speak. One of India’s leading Christian thinkers presented some big ideas on how to help rebuild our nation. He identified the problem that “we have lost the truth and knowledge of God in our government and society”. He claimed that the world has it wrong…..money, technique, and technology are not the keys to a nation’s healing and prosperity. Truth is the root from which vigorous and wholesome societies flourish. One lecture from Vishal simply was not enough to answer all the questions many of us wanted to ask, especially with some of his provocative challenges. Hence many people bought his book “Truth and Transformation–A Manifesto for Ailing Nations” in order to learn more. You can visit his website www.revelationmovement.com and find out more about what he has to say.
